Two weeks ago I launched the beta version of WebMaxedU, my labor of love membership site for entrepreneurs, self-employed professionals, and marketing teams who want to learn how to use the internet to grow their small businesses. The closer I got to the site’s launch date, the better I felt – because I was proud of all the DIY work I had done to make it possible. From developing WebMaxedU’s courses, to making the videos, to designing the layout, I had put a ton of effort into developing all aspects of the site…and finally my hard work paid off! Launching WebMaxedU, however, is just one of many milestones I need to accomplish in order to make it a success.
No, siree, my work at WebMaxedU isn’t done. Actually, it’s just beginning! Why? Well, because now I only have half a business. My product (the website, courses, videos and forum) may be in place, but I still need the other, most important half…the customers. After all, a business isn’t really a business without customers, right? Which leads me to my main point…always focus on your customers! You can have the best product, website or business in the world – if no one’s buying it, though, it may as well not exist. It’s great to have pride in what you do, but creating work you’re proud of is only half the battle. Share your pride with others by marketing your work to folks you think will like it – figure out who your target demographic is, and move from there! Create Facebook and Twitter pages; engage potential customers; offer people something your competition doesn’t. If your product is good, people will respond. All you need to do is put yourself out there!
The BETA version of my site WebMaxedU just launched; my big DIY project the past couple of weeks has been finishing the home page introduction video for it. The Saturday morning before last I dressed up like a used car salesman (or at least what I think one might dress like…LOL! What do you think?) and set a green screen up in my living room to get the final few shots.
Just days before, however, the external microphone that connects to my camcorder broke. It was my fault – I stepped on the (looooooong) cord that connects to the camera and broke it right off (hey, I can’t afford wireless mics yet…I’m working on a DIY budget guys!). Instead of waiting for the replacement mic to come in the mail (the earliest I could get it was the following Tuesday, even with $30 express shipping. The mic itself is only $30 bucks, by the way!), I decided to move ahead and finish my filming over the weekend with the lower-quality built in camcorder mic instead.
DIY Tip: Spend a few extra bucks and get an external mic if you’re using an inexpensive camcorder – good audio makes a huge difference to the overall production quality of your video!
After I got my shots in the ridiculous used car salesman outfit, that same afternoon I edited all of my footage, including everything I filmed earlier in the week – the result was a very rough version of my final format. On Sunday I took a break from all things digital (I try to do that every Sunday!) and on Monday I got back to it, cleaned up my rough cut, trimmed down the ends of each shot (I do that to keep the pace of the video moving right along…I don’t want you guys to get bored!) and started adding the images and titles. On Tuesday I finished adding all of the images and titles, worked on adding some extra “fancy transitions and effects” and tried out some new editing techniques (Final Cut Pro is awesome by the way…and not too expensive either, when you consider everything you get for your buck. Hey, it’s good enough for Hollywood, so it’s good enough for me!). Wednesday morning I added all the music and sound effects. That afternoon I exported and uploaded the finished product to the web and added it the the WebMaxedU home page.
It’s a little rough, but I’m happy with it as is for the time being. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be done…that’s my attitude about a lot of things these days. That’s the way it has to be when you’re a DIY entrepreneur like me and want to make things happen. I’m learning that perfection is subjective and is, quite frankly, totally overrated. No one likes an obsessively nit-picky person anyway! I like to get things done and make improvements if needed…so I say this video is good enough for now! What do you think about the WebMaxedU home page video? Let me know in the comments!
Do you want to learn how to successfully market your small business online? I’m happy to announce that WebMaxedU is finally live. On Wednesday of this week, I quietly transitioned my new site into a BETA “testing” period and opened it up to a limited number of DIY entrepreneurs to try it out for [...]
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will this blog. So I’m starting it out by building a strong foundation that will lead to success. Before I wrote a word, the first thing I did was define my overall goal for this blog: to tell my story and inspire you to do the same. [...]
I’ve been crazy busy getting my new site WebMaxedU ready to “go live.” I’m opening the site’s doors to a limited group of free access users on May 1st – there’s still a lot to get done, however, before then. I’m nervous and excited all at once… and I’m not getting too much sleep as [...]
There’s never a perfect time to start a blog… especially if you’re a do-it-yourself entrepreneur like me. I’ve been building a business. Starting this blog has been at the forefront of my mind for a long time. But for almost a year, I’ve been working away on building something else with my head down. I’ve [...]
Five or six days a week my feet hit the floor no later than 5:30 AM – and many mornings I’m bouncing out of bed even earlier. What can I say? I’m excited to start my day. I enjoy everything about waking up – my cup of coffee, checking out the news, my workout at [...]
